Mbizi Bush Lodge

Recently I had the privilege of staying at this little piece of heaven just outside the Kruger Park. One of the first things our hosts Michael and Mette told us was not to walk alone, particularly at night, as their property is completely unfenced and they’ve had three male lions wandering around for the past week. Wow! Talk about being close to nature…maybe a little too close? Apparently, the dogs were barking (a few evenings before we arrived) and Michael yelled at them to settle down…only to be met by an answering roar from in the garden! They also have trouble with elephants eating any young trees they plant as well as helping themselves to the granadillas on the vine outside the dining room.

Mbizi has a beautiful pool looking out over the bush. The silence is pristine and it’s the perfect place to relax with a glass of wine and enjoy the sunshine.

We were lucky enough to be visited by this beautiful giraffe while we were lazing next to the pool with our books. He stuck around for quite a while and then wandered off to meet up with a few others grazing on the hill.

Mbizi has their own safari vehicle and Michael is happy to take you out on game drives if you arrange it with him. The reserve is fairly small but we really enjoyed the scenery and sundowners next to the river with these romantic views… before returning to the lodge to enjoy Mette’s amazing cooking.

The food was spectacular! Mette included so many generous touches such as cheeses with breakfast that she had brought back from a recent trip overseas as well as home-made cheese souffle.

The warthog carpaccio was a new and delicious experience and her homemade chocolate mousse with blueberries was rich and decadent!
